Upcoming Changes to Dance Course Offerings
We are excited to share some news regarding a new chapter of the Canterbury Dance Program. These changes to our course offerings are designed to capitalise on the strengths and legacy of our program while broadening our reach and scope to provide a more enriching and inclusive experience for all our dance students.
At Canterbury, we believe that dance education is a powerful tool for self-expression, personal growth and community building. Our enhanced course offerings will continue to provide students with unique opportunities to express themselves, build discipline, develop essential life skills and respond to the world around them, all in a supportive artistic community.
These developments will ensure that the Canterbury Dance Program remains accessible and sustainable for all of our current and future students who are passionate about dance.
More Ways to Join: We're opening our doors wider to welcome students with a broader range of experience and backgrounds, from those exploring structured dance education for the first time to those with prior training who wish to broaden their horizons and develop new skills within a rigorous and challenging, but non-competitive and supportive environment.
New Ways of Learning: We're introducing a dynamic approach to dance education with our Technique and Composition classes, which will replace our current course offerings.
- From Grades 9 to 12, Technique classes will be full year courses that will provide students with a strong foundation in essential dance skills, will incorporate different elements of a variety of dance styles, and promote physical conditioning, strength training, and well-being.
- From Grades 9 to 11, Composition classes will be full year courses that will emphasize exploration, creative expression and the development of each student's unique artistic perspective within a teacher-led framework. In Grade 12, the teacher supported Company class will be integrated into the regular timetable, providing dedicated daily time to focus on student-created, performance-focused work drawing from their individual creative perspective and artistic vision.
Unified Course Offerings: We're moving away from separate "Venture" and "Classic" courses to create a single collection of courses that fosters a stronger sense of collaboration among students, as well as partnerships with the community. Students will have opportunities to learn from professional dancers representing diverse cultural and identity-based communities within the Capital Region.
We are committed to a smooth transition as we move forward. Our administrative team has spoken with dance classes and held a parent information night on May 29th to answer questions from families about these changes.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership. Together, we will ensure that the Canterbury Dance Program will continue to inspire and empower students for years to come.
