Upcoming Changes to Dance Course Offerings

Frequently Asked Questions

We understand you may have questions about the changes to the Canterbury Dance course offerings (link to news item). Below you'll find answers to commonly asked questions to help you understand the new changes and what they mean for students.

Why are we changing our course offerings?

These changes are being made to ensure the long-term viability of the Dance Program. Our goal is to provide more sustainable and accessible course offerings that better align with student choice and the Ontario curriculum. These adjustments are designed to expand our reach, support student and staff well-being and provide a more enriching experience for all students.

Will the new structure affect performance opportunities?

No, in fact, the goal is to bolster performance opportunities for all students. The year-long model and the integration of the Company class into the regular timetable are designed to provide more direct teacher support and reduce the need for extensive rehearsals outside of school hours. Dance Night will continue as a marquee two-night event in May, primarily featuring works choreographed by the Company class, with all dancers participating in performances.

How will student assessment and evaluation be handled under the new system?

Assessment and evaluation will prioritize transparency and consistency, aligning with the Ontario Curriculum, Growing Success and OCDSB procedures. We will measure individual student progress against criteria and curriculum expectations, rather than comparing students to each other. Students will be informed about what, how and when they are being assessed, with multiple opportunities to demonstrate their learning.

How will the new courses support students with varied experience levels?

The new course offerings are designed to embrace students with a broader range of experience and backgrounds. We aim to stop separating experience and skill from potential and passion. We want to foster a community where all students, regardless of their starting point, are valued and supported in their growth.

The curriculum will be delivered by qualified teachers who will leverage their unique skills and collaborate to ensure all students benefit from diverse expertise. We will also develop long-term relationships with community partners like post-secondary institutions, professional organizations, choreographers, dancers and musicians to supplement teaching and provide students with diverse learning experiences.

Will there still be auditions?

Yes. For the 2026/2027 school year and beyond, the audition process will employ best practices from Arts Canterbury Auditions. This means experience, skill, potential and passion will all be taken into consideration. Prospective students will need to demonstrate an understanding of the commitment required, the daily expectations for engagement and the challenges that are part of the program.

When will the new course offerings be rolled out?

Students entering into grades 9, 10 and 11 this fall will be integrated into the new course structure. Students in grade 12 next year will find the course content offered reminiscent of, and reflective of, their experiences thus far. We will be working directly with the grade 11 class so that they will have the opportunity to co-construct their final year.
